There's something special about getting your book in print. It gives you the power to inform and influence, educate and entertain which is why they're just as popular now as ever. Otherwise known as 'perfect bound books', 'softback books' or 'soft-cover books'; avid readers inflate the average number of books read by each person in the UK to 12 per year!
Paperback books by definition have a paper-board cover which is flimsier in nature than a hard back book and can be easily identified by the 'perfect bound' style of binding used to create a flat, square spine, easily identified on the bookshelf. This style is best suited to books containing over 40 pages. Here you can calculate prices for paperback books of between 42 and 350 pages.
What size paperback book is best suited to my needs?
A4 is one of the larger common European book sizes mainly used in the commercial world for workbooks, reference guides, catalogues and training manuals.
Before we go to print:
Meet Jack. Jack is our expert when it comes to making sure your files are good to print. Whether or not you request a proof, Jack, or one of his colleagues runs your artwork files through a rigorous 10 point check, testing for all the common problems we encounter and ensuring they're fixed before they're printed, to ensure your printed job turns out exactly as you intend.
Selecting the right material and finish for your book:
For your cover: a 250gsm card weight with a deliciously silky smooth, matt-laminated finish is the most popular choice for most paper-back books but we also offer a very shiny, glossy finish, an amazingly tactile velvety finish and the natural non-coated, non-laminated finish you'd associate with the texture of a nice letterhead. Upgrade to a slightly thicker 300gsm or even 350gsm for the ultimate luxury.
Oh another thing about lamination: this is a very thin protective plastic film applied over the surface of the cover to enhance the look and feel of the book, protect the print and increase the lifespan.
For the inside pages, natural uncoated paper with no reflection or glare is ideal where mainly black and white text and illustrations are dominant such as novels, poetry books, autobiographies and colouring books. Natural uncoated paper can also be easily written on making it perfect for text books. Otherwise if you want vivid colour photographs and fine detail to look their best, such as in photo-books, catalogues or brochures, we'd recommend one the coated grades of paper such as silk or semi glossy.
By choosing our most luxurious soft-touch velvety finish you can also add 'impossible-to-resist-touching' special effects to your cover such as raised spot gloss highlighting and raised metallic foils. These seductive enhancements really help to make your book cover stand out.

PUR Glue Perfect Binding:
There are basically two types of Perfect Binding glue: EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) and PUR (Polyurethane Reactive). Flexpress use PUR glue for it's superior adhesion and lay flat properties. The process involves 'roughing' the spine of the book block enabling the glue to penetrate into the fibres of the paper which ensures a strong, bind with anti-pull out qualities up to 70% better than traditional EVA glue. The cover is creased and hinged before being drawn onto the spine. To see the process and understand just how strong the finished bind is see our demonstration video.
Perfect Bound Books are guillotined down to the finished size using our fully automated, computerised precision book trimmer and packed in extra thick, double-walled corrugated boxes sealed with reinforced tape to withstand the rigours of carriage.
